Does gin taste and smell like alcohol?

Gin and vodka are two distinct spirits. The first is identified with herbal and pine flavors as opposed to the other,  frequently marketed as an odorless, flavorless, and tasteless thing. But both are frequently alternatives to drinks such as cocktails like the Martini and Vodka/Gin and Tonic.

It’s easy to imagine Gin as essentially flavored vodka, but there are a few subtleties that make the two distinct. This article will outline the differences and similarities between vodka and gin.

    Vodka

Vodka will be defined by what’s it not. It’s made to be flavorless (well apart from flavored vodka), clear, unmistakable, and, in every way, indistinct. The U.S. administration defines vodka as “neutral spirits, or alcohol” that has been filtered or processed “so that it is not characterized by distinctive aroma flavor or taste.”

Yet Americans love it. Vodka has been the most consumed drink in terms of volume since 1970. Currently, around 32 percent of the entire liquor industry is vodka. The average American consumes over 3.5 glasses of vodka every month. So it is in Russia and Eastern Europe; however, where the spirit has first been introduced, the drink is consumed by more than 3 times the amount. (Russians can consume the staggering 17.28 vodka shots each month.)

The word “vodka” originates directly from”vodka,” which is the Russian term for water “voda.” Vodka isn’t the only spirit that is clear that you can enjoy, however. There’s cachaca, rum, soju, and many more. Vodka is unique because it can be produced anywhere and made from various things.

The most popular vodka brands in the U.S. include Smirnoff, Absolut, Svedka, Skyy, and Grey Goose.

Vodka cocktails are typically influenced by the flavors and characteristics of other drinks mixed into the beverage. For example, if the drink combines vodka and orange soda, it will be much more similar to orange soda. Likewise, if cranberry vodka is a good choice, it’s similar to cranberry. There are many iconic vodka cocktails; however, many others, including cocktails like Bloody Mary, White Russian Moscow Mule, and Vesper Martini, popularized by James Bond.

    Gin

Gin is a liquor with a juniper-like flavor that’s packaged with at least 40% alcohol by volume. The U.S. Government defines Gin as liquid “produced by the distillation or the mixing of spirits with juniper berries as well as other aromatic extracts or aromatics.”

Juniper, the most prominent flavor of gin, is a taste that is primarily pine. However, it is floral and herbaceous. Gin’s history dates to the Dutch genever, an alcohol-based medicine spirit. The English took possession of genever throughout the 80 Years War and the 30 Years War in the 1600s, and it was called “Dutch bravery.”

In time, genever dropped the wine base in favor of a distilled neutral spirit base and kept the Juniper. The United Kingdom embraced gin full-heartedly (a bit too much) and was later referred to as “mother’s ruin” due to the gin every citizen consumed in the country. In the U.S., gin -or something similar to the spirit was widespread throughout the 1910s and Prohibition. Gin was the base spirit for the first batches of classic cocktails.

Gin can be divided into five fundamental types. First, you can choose from London Dry, which is completely sweet; Plymouth Gin, which is produced by hand in Plymouth, England; Old Tom Gin which is a bit sweeter; Navy Strength, which is at 57 percent alcohol per volume, or more remarkable as well as American also known as West Coast gin, that is typically more herbal.

Whatever the design, Gin can be made using three different methods.

Distilled The berries of Juniper and various aromas are added to a mash fermented and then blended into a distilled.

Redistilled An unrefined base spirit can be distilled using juniper berries and other aromatics.

Compound: Made by mixing a neutral base spirit with juniper berries and other aromatics.

Some of the most well-known brands are Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire, and Aviation. In addition, gin-based cocktails are widespread, including cocktails like the Negroni and the famous Martini (which is first made with Gin), and the Gin and Tonic…

    Both Vodka & Gin

Both vodka and gin can be made from any ingredient, but the most popular bases include wheat, corn, potato, rye, and sorghum. Other options include carrots, beets, and even milk.

Whatever the main ingredient, it’s first made into a ferment and then distilled. It usually happens several times to remove any flavor that is possible. After that, water is added to lower the spirit to 40 % alcohol by volume. Then, for Gin, it is mixed with juniper and other spices and herbs.
